ABOUT AMERICORPS: This is a 10 ½ month, full-time position (40 hours per week), sponsored by the Washington Service Corps (WSC). Applicants must be at least 17 years old, a WSC requirement.
Benefits include excellent training, a monthly stipend of $1,450, health coverage, and a post-service education award of $6,095.
This position is from October 1, 2019 to Aug. 15, 2020, and is located in Shelton, WA.
ABOUT SOUND LEARNING: Join a dynamic community-based organization offering innovative and high quality education programs to adult learners and their families. Sound Learning is a non-profit organization that promotes access to education through community-based small group tutoring and classes in Mason and Thurston Counties. Our programs include Basic Studies (GED Prep, HSPlus diploma, academic skills upgrade to prepare for college and/or training, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Community, academic, employment-related topics, technology, and digital literacy are integrated into our classes. Sound Learning serves close to 200 adults and families each year, in partnership with over 80 trained community volunteers.
Sound Learning staff and volunteers are committed to education that begins with students' strengths, knowledge, and experience and addresses their priorities and goals. Our programs are founded on the belief that active participation in the family, workplace, and community improves a variety of skills and leads to better jobs, healthy families, and strong communities.
ABOUT THE POSITION: The AmeriCorps member will assist in implementing high quality education programs serving adults in the areas of reading, writing, math, English Language learning, basic technology, employability, and job acquisition skills.
Primary responsibilities include teaching, curriculum development, recruitment of volunteers & students, volunteer coordination, outreach, and required record keeping. The AmeriCorps member will also develop opportunities for students to connect with the larger community through informational workshops and community projects; participate in collecting and utilizing data to demonstrate community impact; and assist in organizing events, training, and celebrations.
The AmeriCorps member will work with Mason County residents who are native English speakers and immigrants from other, mainly Spanish-speaking countries. There will be opportunities to learn quality teaching approaches, volunteer recruitment strategies, and student/volunteer intake and coordination. The Americorps member will work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences in collaboration with a team of dedicated volunteers and staff. This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and make a difference through community-based education.
WHO SHOULD APPLY: We are looking for applicants who have at least a high school diploma or GED, are committed to making a difference in the community and interested in improving lives through education. The successful candidate will have an interest and/or experience in literacy and education; strong communication, organizational, and computer skills; the ability to work both independently and as part of a team; dedication to professional development and the mission/programs of the organization.
Applicants must be able to thrive in a busy environment, work independently, and demonstrate the ability to work with people of diverse cultural, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds.
Applicants must be available four evenings a week and able to commute to Shelton. *Spanish language skills are desirable but not required.
